Віктор Гукайло народився в Києві 19 травня 1946 року. Закінчив київську художню середню школу ім. Т. Шевченка та поліграфічний інститут ім. І. Федорова. З 1993 року працював головним художником Київського Державного Академічного театру ляльок. У 2010-2012 роках був головним художником експозиції Музею «Пам’ять єврейського народу та Голокост в Україні» у Дніпрі. З 2016 року - головний художник експозиції «Громадянський подвиг Дніпропетровщини в подіях АТО» Музею імені Яворницького в Дніпрі.
Як художник-ілюстратор Віктор Гукайло співпрацював з видавництвами «Радянська школа», «Вища школа», «Веселка», «Довіра», «Дніпро», «Дух і літера», деякими іноземними видавництвами, робив ілюстрації до українських журналів «Малятко», «Барвінок» та ізраїльського журналу «Кармель».
В 1993-2009 роках Віктор Гукайло був театральним художником 15-ти вистав Київського Державного Академічного театру ляльок. Його роботи зберігаються у багатьох приватних колекціях України, Німеччини, Чехії, Ізраїлю, Англії та США, а також у фондах декількох музеїв.
Роботи митця є у багатьох каталогах вітчизняних та міжнародних виставок й публікаціях, останні з яких: «Художні образи 1+1» (галерея «Лавра», 1997), 10 років «Галереї 36» (2005), Групова виставка в Ізраїлі (2005), каталог виставки «Київська колекція» (2015).
Віктор Гукайло віддавав перевагу нестандартним образним рішенням. У своїх картинах використовував мову знаків і символів, які викликають у глядача безліч асоціацій. Значне місце в його творчості займає тема штетлів.
Ізраїль був не новою для нього країною - він вже їздив туди щонайменше двічі. Кожного разу розповідав потім про міста, рослини, людей, каміння з непідробним захопленням. І кожного разу з непідробним полегшенням повертався звідти додому в Київ. Не так додому, власне, як в майстерню. Майстерня - то на Вєтрова (нині Назарівська), то на Рейтарській, то на Перспективній, то темнувата, то тісна, то спекотна, то холодна чи волога, завжди чиста і впорядкована, із стратегічним запасом паперу і типографської фарби - була для художника Гукайла тим місцем, де життя відбувалося правильно. Де воно було направду можливе. З легким серцем він залишав свою майстерню надовго хіба тоді, коли його деінде чекала інша, нехай тимчасова, але майстерня. Будинок творчості в Седневі - звідти приїхав, поміж щемких пейзажів, цикл «Коли кололи кабана».
Експедиція по містечках Поділля та Волині - там з’явився цикл «Штетл». Десятки поїздок до Дніпра - в Дніпрі ним було створено художню концепцію двох музеїв, Музею Голокосту в Україні та Музею АТО. Певно, не мені одній бракувало уяви вигадати: що має статися, аби валики для монотипії в майстерні на Перспективній вкрилися пилом? Сталася повномасштабна війна.
Ранньою весною 2022 року Віктор Гукайло опинився у Тал Елі, крихітному поселенні в Галілеї. Напочатку був приголомшений переїздом. Умовний комфорт країни перебування, і одночасно відчуття кровного зв’язку із охопленою війною країною вибуття - цей виснажливий емоційний шпагат знайомий мільйонам біженців. А потім художник почав робити те, що робив завжди - працювати.
2 серпня 2023 р. відомий український графік, ілюстратор і сценограф Віктор Гукайло пішов з життя, але талант митця вічно житиме в його роботах, художніх образах і задумах.
10 вересня 2023 р. в Музеї Шолом-Алейхема пройшла виставка робіт талановитого українського художника Віктора Гукайла "Ковчег".

Viktor Gukaylo was born in Kyiv on May 19, 1946. He graduated from the Shevchenko Kyiv Art High School and the Fedorov Polygraphic Institute. Since 1993, he worked as the chief artist of the Kyiv State Academic Puppet Theatre. In 2010-2012, he was the main artist of the exposition of the Museum "Memory of the Jewish People and the Holocaust in Ukraine" in Dnipro City. Since 2016, he has been the main artist of the exposition "Civic feat of Dnipropetrovsk Region in the events of the ATO" of the Yavornytsky Museum in Dnipro City.
As an illustrator Viktor Gukaylo collaborated with the publishing houses "Soviet School", "Higher School", "Veselka", "Dovira", "Dnipro", "Duh i Litera", some foreign publishing houses, made illustrations for the Ukrainian magazines "Malyatko", "Pervinok" and the Israeli magazine "Carmel".
In 1993-2009, Viktor Gukaylo was a theatre artist for 15 performances of the Kyiv State Academic Puppet Theater. His works are kept in many private collections in Ukraine, Germany, Czechia, Israel, UK and the USA, as well as in the funds of several museums.
The artist’s work are in many catalogues of domestic and international exhibitions and publications, the latest of which are: "Art images 1+1" (Lavra gallery, 1997), 10 years of "Galleries 36" (2005), Group exhibition in Israel (2005) , catalogue of the exhibition "Kyiv Collection" (2015).
Viktor Gukaylo preferred non-standard figurative solutions. In his paintings, he used the language of signs and symbols that evoke many associations in the viewer. The topic of shtetls occupies a significant place in his work.
He was not new to Israel - he had already visited there at least twice. Each time he would tell me about the cities, plants, people, and stones with genuine admiration. And each time he would return home, to Kyiv, with genuine relief. Not so much home, in fact, as to his studio. That studio - on Vetrov (now Nazarivska) St., later on Reitarska St., and then on Perspektyvna St. - that studio could be dark or cramped, hot or cold or humid, but always clean and orderly, equipped with strategic supply of paper and printing ink.
For artist Viktor Hukailo, it was the place where life went on as it should; where life was, in fact, possible. With a light heart, he would leave his studio for a while only if another, albeit temporary, working space was waiting for him elsewhere. The Art Center in Sedniv, from where he returned not only with some piercing landscapes, but also the cycle “When They Were Slaughtering a Boar.”
Expeditions to the towns of Podillia and Volhynia - this is how the “Shtetl” cycle emerged. Dozens of trips to Dnipro, where he created the artistic concept for the two museums: the Ukrainian Holocaust Museum and the ATO Museum. I was likely not the only one who lacked the imagination to conjure this up: what would it take for the monotype rollers in his studio on at Perspektyvna St. to start collecting dust? It would take a full-scale war.
In the early spring of 2022, Viktor Hukailo found himself in Tal El, a tiny settlement in Galilea. At first, he was overwhelmed by the move. The relative comfort of the host country and at the same time, a sense of a blood bond with the war-torn country of departure - this exhausting emotional split is familiar to millions of refugees. But then, the artist began to do what he had always done - to work.
Already in April, Viktor wrote, "There is no etching press here right now, one can work with pencil only, so I decided to review my prior works, to analyze them. Using just a pencil. The end result is analytical drawing.” The intonation of summation becomes apparent here. And the Ark is the central image, the body of this final analytical work. But why the Ark, specifically?
It is tempting to look for a simple answer. The image of the Ark fits too comfortably with the metaphor of a refugee, a grand resettlement for the purpose of rescue. Therefore, it can be interpreted as a creative reflection on the events of the last eighteen months. Viktor, however, while being among other things a book illustrator, carefully avoided mimetic narration and literariness even in his purely figurative works, not to mention the works of the last 20-25 years, which usually balance on the verge of representation. He detested opportunism. And most importantly, the Ark was one of those few major themes that Viktor Hukailo consistently addressed throughout his life.
When did this image first appear? I remember his monotypes depicting the Ark from the late 1990s, although this memory might be not as useful for accurately dating this cycle of works, as it is for determining the lasting continuity of our acquaintance. Could it be that the cross-cutting presence of the Ark theme during all these years has been only a carrier, a formal structure, a convenient subject frame to contain his creative pursuits? Or perhaps, as the Ark sails from page to page of that strategic supply of paper, the reality within it crumbles, losing its clear contours, while space acquires an additional dimension, turning into the only place where life is, in fact, possible?
Perhaps there are things that last indefinitely. The house where you live always falls apart. There is always an ongoing feast where life and death dig into each other with their teeth. The Ark always sails, carrying with it those who are clean and unclean.
Unfortunately, on August 2, 2023, the famous Ukrainian graphic artist, illustrator and scenographer Viktor Hukailo passed away, but the artist's talent will live forever in his works, artistic images and ideas.
