. . . .

The famous Lithuanian and Ukrainian film director, film artist, photographer and painter Yuriy Grigorovich is versatilely talented. Painting connoisseurs call him a revolutionary and reformer, capable of using color, lines and light to convey the beauty of the surrounding nature and at the same time make the world of human fantasies real. His paintings can be seen in galleries and private collections around the world.

"Painting is my language, my code, in which everything experienced and felt is encoded," says Yuriy.

"Painting for me is not a passion, but my life, that's why my paintings are so bright and cheerful. If I'm in a bad mood, I'll never pick up a brush, because in that state there's no point in starting anything at all. Painting is a state of mind, and I write only when I am in inner harmony with myself."

As a child, Yuriy began to fantasize on paper, as soon as he could hold a pencil. "When I was 10 years old, my father, after looking at the drawings, decided to enroll me in an art school. I was indignant: "Why? I can do everything anyway," Yuriy recalls.

"I was lucky that there were no computers in my childhood, and my mother gave me pencils and paper, not a tablet. I have always been interested in recording everything that surrounded me. For me, painting is a kind of trance, getting into the past. Writing from memory is the same trance state when you can feel, see, smell, music and stay in it until you finish the picture.

In the art school, a young and enthusiastic teacher worked with us children, who did not hold back the imaginations of the fourth-graders, and at the same time put his hand on it, taught drawing easily, without routine. Then for the first time came an understanding of how much we still have to recognize," says Yuriy.

"On the way to my workshop, walking through the forest, I always stop and listen to the silence. This sense of harmony that enters me, I hold for a long time until I paint a painting or a cycle of paintings. The most difficult thing at this moment is not to communicate with people, but to live in this world and convey what is inside you in a picture. To hold out for two or three days, or maybe a week, is both the most interesting and the most difficult thing."

Yuriy Grigorovich is a cosmopolitan at his best, when, being a man of the Earth, he feels comfortable in any part of the modern world. He was born in Kazakhstan, lived in Ukraine, studied in Dagestan, lived in Vilnius for almost 30 years, now he lives again in Ukraine, in Kyiv, getting inspiration here. Borders are not an obstacle for him. Today, he is so in demand that he has to refuse participation in some projects.

Yuriy Grigorovich is highly valued as an artist in cinematographic circles. His work and talent have been recognized with high awards. For the series of documentaries "Black Death", "Leonardo da Vinci" Yuri Hryhorovych was awarded the prestigious American television award "Emmy Award", for the film "Islamic Spain" - the award "Peer Awards". His works have also received awards from the Jewish Eye and the Union of Cinematographers of Lithuania.

Yuriy Grigorovich lives in Vyshgorod. In the first days of the war, the Russian occupiers captured the prosperous satellite city of Kyiv. And Grigorovich the artist began to paint again - literally one picture every day. It was as if he was creating a picturesque diary: he collected together everything he felt, saw, experienced at that terrible time.

Grigorovich's weapons are his paintings. At first, only black and red were enough - these were the emotions that overwhelmed the artist in the first days of the war. Then feelings of rhyme appeared, more colors. 44 of his paintings went to Lviv, to the Embassy of Poland, by post, as soon as it started working. From there, a carefully packaged message from the artist of the world reached a gallery in Trakai, Lithuania.

A new cycle of his work began, but the artist's supplies and paints began to run out. In an attempt to replenish the supply of paint, Yuriy barely made it to Kyiv. Many roadblocks, fuel shortages, limited traffic.

Grigorovich was lucky to work with director Mantas Kvedaravičius, who was killed in Mariupol. They met during the filming of the documentary "Mariupol". According to Yuriy, Mantas introduced him to the once beautiful Ukrainian port city on Azov. After that, Yuriy visited the city several times, took part in the film festival, held film master classes.

Friends of the artist in Poland and Lithuania repeatedly urged Yurii to emigrate, but he did not agree. He decided to continue resisting the aggressor in his own way - through art.

Yuriy and a colleague shot a short film in Borodyanka. At the same time, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the presidents of the Baltic States visited the city. In one photo, Yuriy photographed the famous clay rooster, which was standing on a shelf in the destroyed kitchen of the apartment; The President of Ukraine presented it to the Prime Minister of Great Britain Boris Johnson.

Yuriy sees contrasts in Ukraine today. Before the aggression, people mobilized to help each other. Ukrainians are united, mutual assistance is visible in all spheres of life. Yuriy's colleagues in cinema and art participate in the defense of Ukraine.

"We need a victory. And help is needed. It is the duty of every person to think about the future of their children," says Yuriy Grigorovich. "We can stop Putin only by force, although this was clear even before the start of the war. Degenerate orcs cannot be treated differently - a rabid dog must be shot."

Such well-known masters of Lithuanian cinema as Sharunas Bartas, Audryus Yuzenas, Audryus Stonis like to work with Yuri Hryhorovych. For example, together with the director Audryus Yuzenas, Yuriy Hryhorovych created the film "Excursion Girl", which became an event in the film world.

Yuri manages to combine different genres of art, a variety of artistic directions. "Because there is a diverse universe around me, and I am an emotional person," he says. "I try, passing through myself the harmony and beauty of the surrounding world, to convey my feelings on canvas, to reflect my moods. In painting, it is impossible to express all emotions with the help of only fundraising."

Art critics consider Yuriy Grigorovich a real magician among film artists, the most cinematic artist among painters. For him, working in the cinema is an opportunity to improvise, to reincarnate, it is a lot of new subjects for painting.

"Cinema taught me spatial thinking, as well as the ability to separate and appreciate those special moments that are important both in creativity and in fate," says Yuriy. "Each new author of a film, a new director is already a different world in which the film artist is obliged to reincarnate.

I usually try to go to the final result of what I set out to do. This is especially true for sketches, because when I write them, they have to convey the feeling of the state of nature at that time. This is the most important thing, because in about 10 minutes everything can change: the wind blew, and the water became a different color, and the clouds began to move. Sketches are an impulsive thing, it's speed, so I always try to see the final result and go for it. When writing sketches, never thinking is the art of writing quickly, accurately mixing color and catching mood. You should always understand why you are writing.

The most interesting thing for me is to convey in pictures what has accumulated in me after each film project - the same world of the film frame. And despite the fact that all my paintings are different, it is recognizable everywhere that I painted them. It's the most versatile and strange at the same time, because I do both abstraction, and landscapes, and still lifes - I have no restrictions at all, I work in different directions and whatever I do - everything turns out interesting."

In order to see what the scenery for the film should be like, Yuriy believes that a reincarnation should take place, just like in painting. He is like a conductor between the author and the final result of the film. The production designer is the first one who can draw what the film will look like, depict the visual world, which will become the point of reference from which the cameraman, the director, will push off. When you create an era, you need to provide the right light, take into account the transformation of the interior.

"In the film, the process where I can express myself as an artist is important to me," says Yuriy. "I'm not interested in just putting furniture in a modern project. I usually refuse to participate in such films. Therefore, when reading the script, I start from the inner world, the state of the words that are written in the script. Because this is the primary source, the emotional one a series that gives you the first right feeling. But you can lose that feeling if you start studying the era first - what the carriage or the house looked like at that time. For me, the condition of this house, of this carriage, that first impression, the new look that gives you your inner world."

For Yuriy, an experiment is always interesting. He is an international language of art. In his works, he writes his thoughts, his vision.

"Cinema" is my way of life, an opportunity to really create a time machine." says Yuriy. "When troops and palaces really move in front of you, and when you can invent, create, implement it yourself - it's very interesting.

I like historical projects, where I, as an artist, can express myself, because in modern projects the tasks are slightly different. Cinema is a strange thing in general, when you have to create rich interiors in only three days, because there is no more money and opportunities. At the same time, the producers demand that it look like a good European renovation, which is done for three months. This is probably the most difficult task, when you have to deceive in such a way as to stick to the budget, and the result came out at the exit. This is creativity."

Recently, Grigorovich has been doing a lot of modern art, he is interested in it, especially abstraction. "It is very complicated, incomprehensible to many," Yuriy emphasizes. "In order to engage in modern art, it is not necessary and even harmful to be able to draw. This is a different world and a completely different approach to art. In order to understand it, it has to be explained somehow, and many people go by touch, grasping this world by intuition. Not to mention the generation of those people who grew up on socialist realism and do not understand modern art at all."

Yuriy Grigorovich believes that modern art is not necessarily abstractionism, it is certain thoughts, directions, forward movement in terms of the fact that art is not confined to a plane, not confined only to galleries and exhibitions. "At the same time, I'm in favor of good wall graphics," he says. "In fact, there are very talented graffiti artists who create a new idea of what surrounds us, shows that the wall can not always be only gray."

Yuri also paints wonderful portraits. "The worst thing is to paint a portrait to order, because you paint what they want to see from you," Yuriy sneers. - "You just paint a picture. When you write to yourself, you do whatever you want. This is Picasso. This is freedom, you create the image of the person you see in him, and is he not in himself. I am interested in discovering the inner world of a person, painting is not a photograph, but your attitude. Painting should not come from the mind, but from the heart."
